Monaco is small enough to walk end to end and dense enough to spend a week in. The harbour is the whole point: superyachts stacked in tiers, the Casino square above, and the Rock across the water with the palace and the old town.

The beach question

Monaco’s own beach is Larvotto — remodelled, clean and lined with clubs. For a proper day on the water most people go a few minutes east into France, to Cap-d’Ail or Roquebrune.

When to go

May is glorious and mad — the Grand Prix owns the last week and prices triple. June and September give you the same weather and a city you can move around in.

Where to stay

Monte-Carlo proper for the casino-and-harbour experience. Alternatively stay in Beausoleil, literally one street uphill in France, for a fraction of the rate and a five-minute walk down.
