Alicante is the sensible end of the Spanish coast: a real city with a castle above it, a palm-lined esplanade, and the Costa Blanca’s beaches running north and south. It costs a fraction of the Riviera and the water is just as clear.
Beyond the city
Drive north for the coves around Altea and Calpe, or to Jávea and the Granadella cove — one of the most beautiful on the Spanish coast. South takes you to the long sands of Santa Pola.
When to go
May to October, with June and September the pick. Alicante gets more sunshine days than almost anywhere in Europe.
Where to stay
The old town around Santa Cruz for character. Postiguet for beach access. Altea or Jávea if you want a base outside the city.
